Developing participatory methods for early diagnosis and data collection for disease in Lupin fields is one of the goals of our project partners at FiBL. Therefore, in the summer of 2023 they hosted a workshop for local farmers where a new app for on-site evaluation of plants was launched. Dr Christina Arcken and Mariateresa Lazzaro form the Lupin project at FiBL demonstrated the use a novel app for early disease diagnosis and scoring made available to local farmers. This app is meant to help farmers evaluate more accurately the presence of pathogens in their crops in order to promote healthier and more effective plant breeding approaches. Team Plants_Intelligence member Felipe Castelblanco joined this workshop to observed how such participatory methods instigate a closer and more reciprocal relation between farmers and plants that were considered difficult and very costly to maintain in the Swiss agricultural fields.
